Clinical Observation on The Beriberi Heart

Abstract
Twelve cases of the beriberi heart are reported.
1) All the cases were young male and the diseases occur red during Summer and early Autumn.
2) In all cases dyspnea, palpitation, tachycardia, edema and accentuated pulmonary second sound were observed simultaneously and recovered dramatically by thiamine hydrochloride.
3) Pulse rates were more than (90/min) and returned to normal by treatment.
4) Lowered diastolic pressure. and increased pulse pressure returned to normal by treatment.
5) Elevated venous pressure returned to normal by treatment.
6) Slight prolonged circulation times shortened to normal ranges by treatment.
7) Heart enlargement decreased in size much slowly to normal, comparing with the other cardiac manifestations.
8) Abnormal electrocardiograms were found in most cases and those changes disappeared by treatment.
